Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Hosts Second Annual Back-to-School Backpack and Supplies Giveaway

BALTIMORE, MD -The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services hosted its second annual Back-to-School Backpack and Supplies Giveaway to support Baltimore students and families as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

This year’s events were held at Calvin B. Scruggs Sr. Memorial Park, located in East Baltimore, in conjunction with National Night Out, and at Greater New Hope Baptist Church, in West Baltimore. Both events featured free backpacks, school supplies, music, and family-friendly activities. Over two days, the Department distributed more than 600 backpacks, four laptops, nine bicycles, and school supplies, helping families across the community gear up for a successful school year.

The Back-to-School Giveaway highlights DPSCS’s commitment to being more than a corrections agency; it reflects our role as a vital part of the communities we serve. By supporting families and helping students start the school year prepared, we reinforce our mission to make communities safer. Many of our staff live in Baltimore, and their presence at these events, volunteering, engaging with residents, and showing pride in their work, builds morale and trust. It’s a powerful reminder that DPSCS is not just about corrections, but about public service, connection, and creating positive change in the communities where we live and work.

This initiative was made possible in part through the generosity of DPSCS employees, the community, and departmental partners who donated backpacks and school supplies in the weeks leading up to the event. Their contributions, combined with the Department’s commitment to strengthening community partnerships, ensure that families across Baltimore have the support they need at this critical time of year.
